Eric Auffhammer Photography

The journal.

A space for the ideas, memories, and choices behind the photographs.

These first notes introduce three series. More of their stories can be added as Eric chooses to share them.

01 / Sanibel Mourn

A painterly way to remember.

Eric made Sanibel Mourn after his mother died. He wanted the photographs of Sanibel Island to hold something of what he felt then. The painterly treatment is part of his tribute to her. She was a painter, and Eric had painted as well.

02 / Ancient Presence

Beyond the colors we expect.

Among the mangroves, Eric heard insects and cracking sounds in an unusually quiet place. The trees felt ancient and mysterious. He shifted color in these photographs to express that strange feeling rather than make a literal record of green and brown mangroves.

03 / The Quiet Elsewhere

In a place that feels elsewhere.

Eric invited his daughter, who was eight at the time, into this surreal series. Her presence brings innocence into a haunting environment. The deeper personal story behind the photographs is still Eric’s to tell, and this journal leaves room for it.
